May 30, 2026 Sexual Wellness & Sex Tech Brief: 7 Stories to Watch
A weekly digest covering regulatory updates, industry developments, safety alerts, market research, and Canadian local news across the sexual wellness and sex tech sectors. Compiled by the Dr.Chen Wellness Editorial Team.
This week's brief opens with two distinctly Canadian milestones: Statistics Canada is in the field with the first-ever sexual orientation question on the long-form census, and Prince Edward Island's hepatitis C program continues to position the province as the country's likely first to reach elimination. On the safety side, a Japanese sextech maker's US data breach is now the subject of a law-firm class-action probe — a reminder that intimate-product privacy risk extends well beyond connected-device firmware. Industry and product news rounds out the issue: XR Brands launches a new silicone ring lineup, Our Erotic Journey expands its premium glass collection through a major distributor, an app-connected clitoral stimulator from ActiveJoy reaches new European retail, and two fresh market-sizing reports give sharper context to how fast the category is growing.
1. Statistics Canada's 2026 Census Adds a First-Ever Sexual Orientation Question [OFFICIAL — CANADA]
Fact: According to Statistics Canada's Report on content changes for the 2026 Census of Population: Sexual orientation, the 2026 long-form questionnaire — distributed to approximately 25% of Canadian households starting May 2026 — includes a new question asking respondents aged 15 and over to identify as heterosexual, lesbian or gay, bisexual or pansexual, or to write in another orientation. CBC News reports this is the first time the question appears on the census.
Background: Until now, Statistics Canada has captured sexual-orientation data only through smaller surveys such as the Canadian Community Health Survey. The census, by contrast, generates the population-level denominators that governments, health authorities, school boards and community organizations rely on for planning.
Significance: For Canada's sexual-health and 2SLGBTQ+ service ecosystem, a long-form census signal is a meaningful planning input — provincial health planners, clinics and program funders typically anchor service-level decisions to Statistics Canada baselines. This may suggest that, over the next funding cycle, geographic and demographic targeting of sexual-health and gender-affirming services becomes more data-driven than it has been to date.
2. P.E.I. Health Officials Say Province Remains Canada's "Front-Runner" on Hepatitis C Elimination [CANADA — PUBLIC HEALTH]
Fact: CBC News reports that Shawn Greenan, hepatitis C co-ordinator for Health P.E.I., says the province remains confident it can eliminate hepatitis C as a public-health threat, and is "probably one to two years ahead of everybody else in terms of achieving elimination." CATIE has separately flagged that three other Canadian provinces are not currently on track to meet the World Health Organization's 2030 elimination target.
Background: Hepatitis C is a bloodborne infection that can be transmitted through sexual activity, particularly among populations with overlapping risk factors. Federal and provincial sexual-health and STBBI strategies in Canada consistently group HCV alongside HIV and other sexually transmitted blood-borne infections.
Significance: P.E.I.'s relatively small population is part of what makes its model work — community groups and clinicians can identify and follow patients more effectively. This can reasonably be viewed as a useful proof point for STBBI programs in larger jurisdictions: dense, well-resourced case-finding and treatment networks deliver measurable elimination progress, even where province-wide population scale is otherwise a disadvantage.
3. Sextech Maker Tenga's US Data Breach Now Under Class-Action Investigation [SAFETY — CYBER & PRIVACY]
Fact: Japanese intimate-products manufacturer Tenga disclosed in February 2026 that an unauthorized actor accessed an employee email account containing US customer information — names, email addresses, order details and support correspondence — affecting an estimated 600 US customers, per TechCrunch and Security Affairs. Plaintiffs' firm Lynch Carpenter LLP has subsequently opened an investigation into possible legal claims on behalf of affected customers.
Background: Sextech and intimate-products companies sit on highly sensitive customer data — purchase history, addresses, and in some cases identifying preferences — that can be weaponized in extortion attempts even when payment data is not exposed. The Tenga incident is one of several recent breaches across the broader adult and intimate-products industry.
Significance: For Canadian consumers, the practical takeaway is that brand prestige and "no payment data exposed" framing are not by themselves a privacy safeguard for intimate-product purchases. (Editorial note:) Retailers and brands operating in this category should be assumed to be attractive ransomware/extortion targets, and disclosure practices, MFA on staff email, and minimization of stored customer data should be evaluated by buyers — not just regulators — as part of brand trust.
4. XR Brands Adds Four New "Creature Cocks" Silicone Wellness Rings to Retail Lineup [INDUSTRY — PRODUCT]
Fact: According to JRL Charts (May 29, 2026), XR Brands has expanded its Creature Cocks product universe with four new silicone wellness rings — Venom Loop, Constrictor, Hell Fang, and Octo Grip — crafted from body-safe silicone with fantasy-styled designs aimed at the wellness retail channel.
Background: Cock rings and wearable performance rings have been one of the more durable consumer-side categories in adult retail; XR Brands has used Creature Cocks as a vehicle to refresh the segment with novelty branding while keeping a body-safe silicone construction.
Significance: For Canadian specialty retailers, body-safe silicone constructions in the wearable-ring category remain easier to merchandise on a "wellness-first" shelf than products with TPE or PVC components. (Editorial note:) Fantasy-themed external aesthetics can broaden a category beyond the traditional male-performance shopper into novelty and gift purchasing, which retailers often use to lift basket size in summer and Pride-adjacent windows.
5. Our Erotic Journey "Cristal" Borosilicate Glass Wellness Collection Lands at WSST [INDUSTRY — TRADE]
Fact: JRL Charts reported on May 22, 2026 that Our Erotic Journey (OEJ) has partnered with We Sell Sex Toys (WSST) to make its Cristal Collection — a premium line of handcrafted borosilicate glass wellness devices designed for temperature play — available through WSST's retail platform.
Background: Borosilicate glass is a non-porous, body-safe material that allows for thermal play (warming or cooling), and is generally easier to clean and sanitize than mixed-material toys. Bringing a glass-only line into a major distributor's storefront expands availability beyond OEJ's direct-to-consumer site.
Significance: This can reasonably be viewed as part of a broader shift in retail toward premium, body-safe and sensory-differentiated wellness products rather than commodity novelty items. For Canadian buyers, glass and stainless lines have historically been the easiest "wellness-aesthetic" SKUs to stock alongside lubricants and educational books without raising concerns from landlords or insurers.
6. Tingly Clitoral Stimulator with ActiveJoy App Reaches European Distribution Through Lovecherry [SEX TECH]
Fact: EAN Online reports that Tingly — a clitoral stimulator built around what the brand calls "Finger Wiggling Technology" and paired with the ActiveJoy companion app — has become available through Lovecherry distribution. The device offers nine finger-motion modes for external stimulation and nine wiggling modes along the body of the unit, constructed from medical-style silicone.
Background: App-controlled external stimulators have become a maturing slice of the sextech market, alongside connected vibrators and partner-sync devices. ActiveJoy is positioned as a "total privacy" connected-device platform across multiple brands and product types.
Significance: The Tingly launch is one more data point in the continued evolution of app-connected pleasure devices toward biomimetic motion (mimicking touch rather than just vibration). (Editorial note:) For consumers, the parallel privacy discussion (see Story 3) matters: any app-paired intimate device is, by definition, a connected device whose data-handling practices and security posture deserve scrutiny before purchase.
7. Two New Sexual Wellness Market Forecasts: Research and Markets Pegs 2026 at US$55.66B; SNS Insider Sees US$68.59B by 2035 [RESEARCH — MARKET SIZING]
Fact: Research and Markets' 2026 Sexual Wellness Market report estimates the category will grow from US$51.17 billion in 2025 to US$55.66 billion in 2026, an 8.8% year-over-year increase, with the firm projecting US$75.17 billion by 2030 (CAGR 7.8%). A separate SNS Insider release distributed via GlobeNewswire on April 9, 2026 projects the market reaching US$68.59 billion by 2035.
Background: Sexual wellness market size estimates vary widely between research houses depending on how broad the category is defined (e.g., whether OTC supplements, lubricants, devices, lingerie, telehealth and pharmaceuticals are all in scope). The two reports above sit at the more conservative end of the spectrum compared with some trillion-dollar long-range forecasts that have circulated in recent months.
Significance: For Canadian retailers and brand operators, the relevant signal is less the headline number and more the consistent direction: high single-digit annual growth across multiple independent reports, driven by online distribution, telemedicine integration and supplement adoption. This may suggest that planners discount any single forecast and instead anchor decisions to the range — i.e., growth, but at single-digit, not exponential, rates.
Editors' Note: What This Week's Stories Mean Together
Three threads run through this issue. First, infrastructure: Statistics Canada's census change and P.E.I.'s hepatitis C model both represent the unglamorous public-health plumbing that makes downstream sexual-health programming possible. Better baseline data and well-functioning case-finding networks tend to compound over years, not weeks.
Second, privacy as a category risk. The Tenga US breach investigation and the Tingly app-connected launch sit on opposite sides of the same question: as intimate products become more digital and more data-rich, the trust dividend goes to brands that minimize collection, harden disclosure, and treat security as a customer-facing feature rather than back-office compliance.
Third, the wellness reframing of adult retail continues. Body-safe silicone rings from XR Brands, premium glass from OEJ via WSST, and consistent mid-single-digit growth in market forecasts all point in the same direction: the category is professionalizing, and the assortments that look most defensible in conventional retail and online channels are the ones that already lean wellness-first in materials and merchandising.
